starvie cvvc is real!
May. 1st, 2025 07:33 ami was very vaguely debating vcv because they're better quality but i do not have the time to put in that much effort
heeeere they are!
i need to redo some of the samples for pronunciation, but overall i think it's pretty decent! i'd also like to record another pitch for them since they don't sound great at higher notes. i probably have to edit some of the otos as well
i might record a voice color for them with my chest voice, but my chest voice is wildly inconsistent and i don't know if it'll fit them very well
also, i'm sick which sucks ass because my exams start very very soon!! hopefully i get better before then (':
baby's first voicebank
Apr. 28th, 2025 11:25 pmi've been thinking about recording an utau voicebank for a while. i had some time home alone today (after studying for like 3 hours) so i made a super basic cv voicebank following salem wasteland's tutorial
this is meant to be based off the voice of starvie, my undertale oc, who i've done a bit of voicing for before (by voicing i mean just three vowels for a music sampling thing).
it's a little choppy because my samples weren't super high quality, and this was my first time configuring oto.ini (basically the configuration file for how the samples should play), so there are some mistakes which i'll fix sometime.
i'm pretty happy with it considering it's my first try, but i don't know if it's similar enough to starvie's voice for my taste—the utau samples aren't as breathy as starvie's previous samples are (to be fair, it's harder to be breathy when you're doing actual consonants). they're closer to my actual voice, which i feel is higher-pitched than what i imagine starvie would have.
oh, and here's starvie's "original" voice if you're curious. the first file is the actual samples i recorded (over three years ago!) and the second is an example of it in action (made by my friend who does music stuff)
volume warning: the first file is really quiet. the second one is normal volume
i don't know if i should rerecord most of the samples to make them more legit (there's over 130 samples). i also plan on turning this into a cvvc at some point, which has like 50 more samples
what i'll probably do is have this as a "normal" voicebank, then record more accurate samples as a "soft" voice color, so that my work doesn't go to waste
we are the music makers or something
Apr. 25th, 2025 06:43 pmi have a bandcamp now! there's only one thing there right now, but i'll hopefully be releasing a 4-5 track ep sometime this year
here's a short preview of the latest song i made for it:
i made the entire track last night after having milk tea. i rarely make music i'm proud of, so i'm very happy with this!
there's also some vocalsynth in the background, i used aphelia. i like their general sound, but they do have some slightly weird pronunciations
now is a bad time to be demotivated
Apr. 20th, 2025 07:59 pmmy second wave of exams starts in less than 2 weeks and i am currently averaging about an hour (maybe two if i'm lucky) of studying each day between lots of scrolling on my computer and doing stuff that is not studying
i'm sort of at that stage where i'm concerned about studying but too tired to actually do anything about it. my studying is mostly practice papers (skipping the parts i especially don't feel like doing) and occasional blurting. my first wave of exams was a few weeks ago but i am still tired somehow
i try not to beat myself up too much about this (': but i really hope i can recover from this soon and actually lock in
also i have been a little bit sick the past couple days. here's to hoping i get well
things i should be doing:
- studying
things i am doing:
- analyzing napstablook's japanese dialogue
- not studying
i'm okay at japanese since i lived there for a few years (日本で数年住んでいたので、日本語が少しできる。), but i'm not that good at it and don't really understand the art of intentionally using katakana. i know a little bit about using the language for characterization (ie. showing a character's personality) but only a little
my original understanding of napstablook's speaking style in japanese was:
- no kanji
- sentences end with katakana (eg. そうですヨネ)
i took a more in-depth look today, and it's apparently more complicated than this
all this dialogue is taken from this video
…ゴメン なんか…
ジャマしちゃった みたいだネ…
...gomen nanka... jamashichattamitaidane...
sorry... um... it seems like i interrupted you...
ごめん (gomen) is in katakana here for some reason? 邪魔 (jama)—which is usually kanji—is as well. at the end of the second sentence, ね (ne) is katakana, while だ (da) isn't.
キミのトモダチ… かえっちゃっタ…
kimi no tomodachi... kaecchatta...
your friend... left/went home...
君 (kimi) and 友達 (tomodachi) are katakanized here, similarly to 邪魔 above. i can't tell if "かえっちゃっタ" is meant to be "帰っちゃった" though, which has kanji that isn't replaced by katakana.
どうしよウ… せっかく たのしそうニ してたのにネ…
doushiyou... sekkaku tanoshisou ni shitetanonine...
what should i do... you seemed like you were having fun...
the kanji in 楽し isn't katakanized here, which doesn't seem to follow the above pattern, so there's definitely something i'm missing. also the particle に (ni) is katakanized in the middle of the sentence, but not in the phrase のに (no ni). strange
えっと… ちょっと…あいさつしたかったダケなんダ…
etto... chotto... aisatsushitakatta dake nanda...
umm... uhh... i just wanted to say hello...
挨拶 (aisatsu) isn't katakana here, so my initial thought (that they katakanize all kanji) seems to be wrong.
えっと……………
etto.......
uuhmmm.......
えっと seems to be what they say in the japanese translation instead of "oh". just from my knowledge, i think that makes them sound more unsure/nervous than the dejectedness that's conveyed in the english version
here's the original text in english, by the way:
... sorry, i interrupted you, didn't i?
as soon as i came over, your friend immediately left...
oh no... you guys looked like you were having fun...
oh no... i just wanted to say hi...
oh no.................................................
i would do more but i need to study (i've been procrastinating all day)
i like (love is a strong word) macos, but good god doing utau stuff leaves a lot to be desired
by default, openutau comes with two resamplers: worldline and worldline-r. they are… not amazing. they work pretty well with some banks (like aica), but not with a lot of other banks. especially with hitsune kumi, which i like using, it makes a lot of schwoop noises. not pleasant
a very large majority of resamplers are created for windows. there are supposedly ways to get them to work on mac and linux with wine, but so far i have had no luck
for a few months i’ve been using macres which is a fork of tn_funds and designed for mac. it’s pretty good—much better than worldline for kumi—but it’s a looping resampler, so it sounds weird with longer notes and i have to render those notes with worldline. it’s okay, but there’s still noises about half of the time
i found straycat-rs literally like fifteen minutes ago, which can be built for mac! it’s a stretch resampler, so i don’t get those looping issues. it makes some weird crunchy noises with r and w sounds though, which kind of sucks, but i can just use macres for those notes so it’s no big deal
make yourself at home
Apr. 16th, 2025 01:19 amhey, i'm stel (she/they/it), an artist of all sorts. i like drawing and making websites, among other things!
journal info
i don't make access-only posts and don't plan to as of typing this, so i won't grant access to anyone unless this changes
my journal theme is by plainstyles, customized by me
what to expect here
- my short and long ramblings, re:
- media i like
- characters i like
- things i'm making
- the general goings-on of my life
- lots of (parentheses) and small text
- occasional sharing of creations
where else to find me
my main website houses most of my stuff. other relevant links can be found here
a quick note
i am uncomfortable with media that intentionally glorifies or defends relationships that are predatory, abusive, or incestuous. if you're proudly in favor of these types of media, i kindly ask that you don't interact closely with me or argue with me about these views
i am very pro-queer and pro-trans. i hope that isn't something i have to clarify here
i got a vague idea for a fanfic about an hour ago at 11pm... i'm plotting stuff now. i don't know if i'll have the mental or temporal capacity to make anything related to this but it's fun anyhow i suppose
i am not the most proud of my writing skills when it comes to plotting or prose or really most stuff but i do find it fun from time to time
the napstablook brainrot is perpetual
Apr. 15th, 2025 04:10 pmperpetually EMBARRASSING for me
i've been working on a napstablook webshrine for a little bit! (ie. i started a few weeks ago)
i may like them a little too much... i am slightly embarrassed
i really liked the idea of making different things in their room lead to different pages, and it was fun to figure out! i downloaded the spritesheet from spriter's resource, and placed all the stuff by hand (that's why the music discs might be slightly off)
unfortunately that comes at the cost of not being able to resize the image on mobile, but i don't think it's a huge deal?
the music playing stuff took me too long to figure out (it's more advanced than you think!) (well, not actually. maybe i'm just an amateur at javascript). i had to factor in whether a file is already playing, which file that is, etc... i think it's worth it though
did you know that ghouliday is just jingle bells in a different soundfont? i didn't realize that until i started working on the site
the "blookposting rambles" page was inspired by marinehaddock's zine "webshrines for people poisoned by microblogging". i thought the idea of copying my genuine rambles to the site was silly (even if uncomfortably candid) and i had fun replicating the styles of the sites i use (it was mostly copy-pasting from inspect element, but still)
blooky only has so much furniture (damn, you live like this?), so i got the idea last night to make a "second floor" for my more oc-related stuff. i'll edit blooky's room to include some stairs up, i guess, and i'll make a room image for my oc (i'll just rip the furniture from elsewhere in the game, i guess. worried about the color palettes matching though...)
i also want to make the homepage "cleaner", for lack of a better word. feels too serious and slightly messy as i'm writing...
(no subject)
Apr. 14th, 2025 08:41 pmi tried to do some studying today—i got through 3 subtopics, but i'm worried i won't be able to keep it up (especially if. y'know. my back doesn't get better)
my school schedule is more lax now, though, which is nice. hopefully that'll make up for my tiredness
#i need a good "annoyed"/"tired" icon #or any more icons at all other than the ones i already have
tumblr is a sinking ship
Apr. 10th, 2025 06:27 pmthings are looking worse for tumblr, so i might start being more active on here. hopefully tumblr won't die, but the things i'm hearing do not sound great
i've been looking a lot more into dreamwidth today. it seems like a really nice place, i love the extra visibility and filtering features! unfortunately it doesn't mean much if none of my friends are here ):
for the time being, i'm just checking out dreamwidth, no guarantee i'll stay—tumblr is sort of going to shit and also this place just seems cool
